WEEKLY WEIGHT LOSS CHALLENGE #1

Did you like me on facebook yet? Thanks 🙂 xox

I am still on my 30-day water challenge. Did you read my post on the water challenge? If not, go read it now 🙂 I’ll be waiting. {p.s. The post will open on a fresh page :)}

Although the first week was quite easy, it’s getting harder day by day. I think it’s due to lack of motivation and also because of the cold climate. It’s raining cats and dogs.

I LOVE rain.. Don’t you?

So I thought, because of my fall backs with my 30-day water challenge, that I should dry something short term. So here comes my first Weight loss challenge…

I HOPE THIS WORKS OUT WELL..

WEIGHT LOSS CHALLENGE 1

I stopped eating sweets when I started my healthy eating journey. But recently (maybe because my dietitian changed my diet so that I could have 2 tsp of sugar per day) I am craving for more and more sweets. I try avoiding them as much as possible. But that vision of a gooey piece of chocolate cake, is clinged to my mind, like a pirates hook! LOL

It’s hard avoiding sweets, as someone who literally lived on sweets. But I see MANY girls, who made huge sacrifices for a healthy life. So I thought, why can’t I? This week, I’ll try hard to take away the sugar cravings from my life.

Every one knows how good fruits are right? I find it hard to eat fruits. There are these times in my life, that I really wanna eat fruits. But now, I am going through a phase of NO fruits. So I will try adding one fruit a day, to make my body get used to it. Then we’ll see how far I can go.. But for now, it’ll be atleast one fruit per-day.

I can’t remember when I last ate A chocolate. But I’ve been adding a lot of cocoa powder in my life. And it makes me crave more and more chocolate. And I thought of getting rid of that 🙂

My mom cooks breakfast and lunch for me. Dinner and snacks? They are left-out for me. When I first started eating healthy I loved the idea of cooking my own food. But now, I HATE it. Like, it takes lots of time. That’s why I always end up eating oily-restaurant food.

I came up with a solution. I will make my meals earlier, so that I don’t feel bored and binge on.

So this week will be filled with covering my challenges AND studying.. Exams are coming up!

Oh, and Zumba. I hope to start Zumba soon. But I never do. When it comes to exercising everday is an ‘I’ll do it tomorrow” day for me. So I will start Zumba this week? Hopefully..

What are the challenges you face when losing weight? Cooking? Meal planning? Exercising? Cravings? Share with me.. I’d love to hear 🙂

Follow me on instagram, lovelies.. XOXO

WEEKLY WEIGHT LOSS CHALLENGE1

WHY I FINALLY DECIDED TO LOSE WEIGHT

I weighed 233lb at my highest. I would say 106kg, because in Srilanka we usually do weigh in by Kg’s and not pounds. So I am more used to using kg’s. Before the weigh-in this time I was 96 Kg. It still didn’t hit me MUCH. I knew I was going the wrong way, but I was… What should I say? Too lazy maybe? Yes, I was too lazy to start exercising and eating healthy food.

So when I passed the 100th mark, I freaked out! I was so depressed, I should say.

I DECIDED TO LOSE WEIGHT!

1) I STARTED GETTING SICK

I was diagnosed with fatty liver, stage 2.

I had symptoms of PCOS (PolyCystic Ovary Syndrome).

Doctors said that there is a higher possibilty of me getting Diabetes in my mid 20’s because of my heavy weight and family medical history.

Enough right? Yes, I felt so too. I knew at this point that I SHOULD bid good-bye to my chocolate filled (Oh how sad.) milk-shake lifestyle. I DECIDED TO LOSE WEIGHT

2) I STARTED AVOIDING SOCIAL GATHERINGS

Most of my life I was not that party-girl. I didn’t like going to parties. I ignored them. I did everything out of my power to avoid those.

But secretly, deep inside me I did want to go. I wanted to go out and enjoy.

I gave it a bit of thought and I realized, It’s not that I don’t like parties, It’s just that I don’t feel confident. Yes, my self-esteem was reaching out the bottoms of the ocean. I was not really me. I was blaming my life on my big-body. I don’t see myself as ugly (no, I don’t think I’m supermodel pretty too!). I knew I could wear pretty clothes like other girls, but I felt so uncomfortable.

Most of my clothes were baggy enough to cover my big belly.

This was the time to change. I never wanted me to hide out from the outer world, ashamed of my big body. I DECIDED TO LOSE WEIGHT.

3) I WAS DEPRESSED

I became mad at EVERYONE around me. I fought with my mother, my sister, brother and NOT my father of course (I didn’t wanna deal with the consequences that follows a fight with him. lol). My relationship with my boyfriend was on the rocks and I realized it was not his fault, but only mine. We didn’t have any problem but everytime I was upset about my body, I blamed it on him.

Do you feel me? I know many girls who are going through these stages.

I realized I was getting depressed. Even for the very small matters I thought of suicide (but never had the courage to do so, thank god!) I knew at that point I needed a change. A change in something that has been troubling me since I was born. Yes, I was heavy FROM birth.

I decided to say good-bye to the fatties lying within me.

4) I COULDN’T WEAR WHAT I WANTED

I was not comfortable with leggings, but wanted to wear them.

I was not comfortable with dresses, but wanted to wear them.

I was not comfortable with body-shape-defining clothes, but wanted to wear them.

I was not comfortable with swimming kits, but wanted to wear them.

Pretty things were and still are my obsession. I love wearing pretty clothes. But I noticed my wardrobe slowly shifting from splashy colors to just black and white or dull colors. I was comfortable, wearing baggy clothes because they covered all the area which I wanted covered.

My self esteem was slowly going down and I didn’t like it. SO I decided that it was high time that I worked out something on my weight.

5) I ENVIED THOSE GIRLS WITH FIT BODIES ON INSTAGRAM

Instagram is heaven. I should say. It is for everyone. It’s so motivating, Seeing those fitness seeking healthy ladies out there, I knew I wanted to be like them. I saw me as them in the future. I wanted to inspire many others who are in need of constant motivation. For those who needed to be reminded that they are loved.

6) MY BOYFRIEND WAS A FITNESS FREAK. LOL!

No, he never said anything about me being fat. In fact he wanted me to stay so because I was so comfy. My friends at school used to tease me saying “your boyfriend is so lucky, because you feel like a pillow”.

I loved those comments. Complements, maybe. But having a boyfriend who is fit, I didn’t want to look or feel old when I’m with him. I wanted to be comfortable going in public with him. I got used to that. But still, I feel the need to lose so much of weight.

Anyways, I’m lucky! He IS very helpful in my journey of eating and living healthy and losing weight.

7) I WANTED TO WEAR PRETTY HEELS, WHICH IS NOT A WEDGE.

I remember being so embarrassed because the heel of my newly bought shoes bended because of my weight. I never wore a high heeled shoe after that, unless it was a wedge. My shoe collection was ALL wedges. How depressing is that?

So yes, I decided to lose my weight. And I am working towards it. I hope I could do it. And yeah, this is my story. What’s your story? Share with me why you decided to lose weight? What motivates you? Share with us, in the comments section.

TAKING UP THE 30-DAY WATER CHALLENGE

One day, while surfing through instagram (Which I do MOST of the time) I saw something about a 30-day-water-challenge. I’ve seen all those challenge! Squat challenge, Detox challenge, Paleo challenge, no-sugar challenge and so on.

This caught my eye, maybe because that very fine day in the morning I saw this article of a girl trying out drinking 64 ounces of water a day, for a week. And she saw no results. But, as per my experience you don’t get direct results of ANYTHING! Even those beauty pills who claim to work so well atleast needs 3 weeks to show its wonders.

I quickly googled, to see how much water, a woman should drink, per-day. And this article which I found on webmd said something so different. According to the most popular beliefs I thought a woman should drink 2.2 liters of water while a man needed 3 liters.

weight-loss-water-challenge-3

The benefits of drinking water as per many articles on the Google search included;

1- It’s immense contribution towards weight loss

2- Detoxing body and helps lead a healthy life

3- Clears out skin and makes your skin glow

4- Gives you a healthy heart

5- Relieves headaches and migraines

Check out the greatist article for more fun reasons to have MORE water in your life.

I decided to take up the challenge!

There were 5 main reasons which helped me take that decision.

1- I needed to lose weight, so it was more than enough motivation for me to start up the water challenge.

2- I also knew it was a good habit, it never hurts you to incorporate good habits into your life.

3- It reduces your risk of cancer

4- Boosts energy levels

5- It improves productivity.

So I will be starting it today. And will share with you my results every week. After 30-days, I hope I have clear skin and it helps me lose weight..

Are you there yet? Thanks for being with me.. Here is a FREE (30-DAY WATER CHALLENGE) printable water intake record sheet for you!

AN INTERNSHIP WHILE STUDYING?

To those who are doing higher studies, at some point you must go through an internship/training to get a good job. For most of us, it’s after studies.

You finish the degree, and then go for training, then get a job.

To those who are lucky, much and to those who are ready to break the circle, there is a better path. Go through your internship, WHILE STUDYING!

Yes, I know, not everyone gets the opportunity to do so, but what if you get? You are MORE THAN LUCKY, friend!

Thinking why? Here you go…

YOU GET PRACTICAL EXPERIENCE IN THE RELATED FIELD.

There are many working at Domino’s and KFC and many other such places. They also get a good exposure to the real world and they are also covered with practicality. But what harm does it do to get more experienced in your related field?

When you go through an internship, it is usually with very higher personnel in the field you chose to excel. You learn A LOT! You don’t need to memorize those. It comes to you. Practical experience is THAT wonderful, I’m telling you.

YOU LEARN SOMETHING YOU NEED FOR YOURSELF.

Will you be flipping burgers all your life? No right?

I am sorry if I am offending KFC workers, but is it the life you finally want for yourself? I know that it is a wonderful job to have! Oh, the food! I’d die to get a job there. But, given the choice between that and an internship (paid or non-paid) I would go for the later.

Mainly, because what I learn there will come in handy all my life throughout every job that I do. You learn one new thing a day, at the end of the month it sums up to 30 new things, right?

YOU LEARN HOW TO DEAL WITH CORPORATE PEOPLE.

Working at an office environment, provides more exposure towards the corporate world. You get to show your colors. This is your chance to build relationships with those who are at higher positions than you.

You do your work well, and higher the chances that you get job offers lined up for YOU!

I am talking about jobs, to start right after you finish off college. Sounds cool right? When your friends are busy APPLYING for jobs, you’ll be busy TICKING OFF jobs!

YOUR STUDIES ARE MUCH EASIER WITH THAT PRACTICLE KNOWLEDGE

Have you ever noticed that when you know something, and all of a sudden the lecturer takes that for an example, you get excited and you start listening?

That will happen all of the time when you are on an internship. You get lots of experience on the subject and the lecturers already have those. Chances are high that they’ll take in-discipline examples instead of other ones. The one’s those are closer to them.

You’ll be the new braniac in class. You start listening and responding both.

YOU GET TO GO FOR A JOB, SOONER!

The time you allocate for studies, you anyway have to spend on studies. But, you’ll have so much free time that you really have time to work a full-time job, but can’t do so legally.

After college you anyway have to cover 1 year internship or may be more with regard to the subject disciplines. When it comes to more humanity related subjects it’s more than one year.

But you have an option! You could go for a normal part time job, like many OR find an internship opportunity. While studying without wasting time if you decide to complete the necessary practical experience, you could go for a job soon after college.

It’s a Win-Win situation!

IT LOOKS MORE THAN GOOD IN YOUR RESUME

Imagine you and your friend going for a job interview 1 year after college. You have 1 year internship and 1 year work experience and your friend has 1 year internship ONLY. Who is more likely to get chosen? You or your friend? You right?

Aren’t there enough reasons for you to go for that internship, now?

A TIGHT SCHEDULE MAKES YOU STUDY HARD

I don’t really know how this would work out with others, but for me, the tighter the schedule, the more I get good grades.

I go over-board when I have lots of free time. I watch movies. Worst! TV series. Once you get addicted to one you have no escape until you finish off the whole series. Ugh!

I sleep! Like all the time. Ii lay in bed, because I’m too lazy to get up.

Have you experienced the sudden boost of hormones in your body when the exams are so near? It’s because you have so much little time to do a lot of stuff! Same happens when you are on a busy schedule. You get more tasks done in a very little time.

Believe me, if you don’t really want to be a beggar in the future, you WILL study.

make-use-of-time-quote

IT BOOSTS YOUR CONFIDENCE.

It’s a huge boost of confidence when you get recognized. When you know stuff that your peers haven’t even heard of!

HINT : YOU CAN GET A JOB BEFORE YOUR FRIENDS

10 THINGS I WISH I KNEW BEFORE COLLEGE

It was hard to all of a sudden change from school to college education. I know that most of you find it hard as well. The sudden change of everything. It takes time to adapt. It would have been so much better if someone told me it was going to be different.

It’s not the life you see in movies. Sure it is fun! But at the same time, it requires a lot of commitment.

As everything else it has its own pros and cons.

Click below to see the pro’s 🙂

Now I will tell you what I wish I had known before I started College. So that you, my friends, will find it easy to adapt.

1. NO ONE WILL PUSH YOU TO STUDY AND PASS EXAMS.

In school teachers were always behind. They made us study. It was as if they studied for us.

I am not complaining about college lecturers, but they don’t care if you pass or not. It’s up to you to study and get good grades. Sure some will motivate you. But you will witness a sudden drop of external motivation when you move straight from school to college.

2. YOU CAN’T COPY YOUR ASSIGNMENTS.

I remember assignments in school. They were so easy. Specially because everyone could do the same, changing a few words.

At college it matters. Almost all of the assignments you have to submit, is submitted online.

Plagarism checkers are my worst nightmare. It is a headache. You have to do a FRESH assignment.

3. YOU HAVE TO DO A LOT OF EXTRA READING.

Until I finish college education my ‘to -read’ list of books will always be Psychology books. I have 7 big books and 2 small books lined up to finish up before April.

Sad right? When you know you can’t finish it off but still you want to. If I ever could finish up those books, I would have been 200% more confident to sit for the exam.

Not just that. I have to surf the net and find GOOD, HIGH-QUALITY stuff to read.

4. YOU HAVE TO BE THOROUGH WITH THE REFERENCING STYLE, YOUR COLLEGE USES. AND CONSTANTLY BE UPDATED.

Harvard referencing style, APA style, Vancouver style are some of the most popular one’s. But there are others as well.

To make things worse, my college uses ‘Harvard-Coventry’ style. Urgh how much I hate it.

One semester I went through the whole guide and did the assignments. The next semester (after just 3 months)  I had to go through the guide again because it was UPDATED. Not much of  a change, but complex-ed than before.

5. YOU ASSIGNMENTS REQUIRE {REAL} COMMITMENT.

School assignments were the best. You will feel it when you start doing college assignments. Most of the time it is 30% of your total grade for any subject.

You have to be thorough with the Referencing. You have to be alert on plagiarism. You have to read a lot of extra things.

And the best part of it is when it takes you about one whole week to read and understand the question. lol. You get the irony there right?

6. FRIENDS WILL NOT HELP YOU WHEN IT COMES TO STUDIES (MOST OF THEM)

“Anything else other than studies, I’ll be there.”

No friend will say so. But it is true. This is competition. As I said before, you’ll have to do a lot ( I mean it, A LOT!) of extra reading. They’ll share with you what extra materials they use. But most of them! They’ll prefer keeping it to themselves.

Can’t really blame them. But, they don’t. You should help out yourself.

7. YOU WILL MAKE FRIENDS WITH PEOPLE WHO ARE NOT YOUR AGE.

I had friends, who were only maybe 10 years younger than my mom. Not bad. But it’s hard to blend in. You’ll freak out when your needs totally differ from theirs.

For a group activity at college last week we had to make a list of our basic needs. Mine were so simple, like colorful stuff, food, family and boyfriend and my phone of course. One friend, said ‘my need is to give good education to my children’, another, ‘I want to have my own children’. I was so freaked out.

There is nothing wrong with their needs, it’s just that they are sooooooo complex than mine. So I am telling you, you have to, it’s a MUST, expect friends of different ages. Sometimes all your friends will be so similar to you, but you could never say.

8. YOU REALLY HAVE TO STUDY.

I ended my school life, earning 3 A’s. With the MINIMUM effort to study. I won’t lie. I did study. But not much. I had lots of free time.

I studied and I enjoyed life. Enjoying both at the same time was the wonder of school life.

But once I started college I had to spend lots of time studying. Real time. To take down proper notes. To read those big books. To make short notes. And everything else required real commitment.

Expect spending most of your time to study.

9. IT’S A WHOLE DIFFERENT ENVIRONMENT.

It will take some time for you to adapt to the new college life. But after you do, it will be the best period in your life. But there are many college drop-out’s just because they could not adapt to their new lives.

As they say, “After a storm comes a rainbow”. Expect to spend about one whole stormy semester before having fun with the rainbow 🙂

10. YOU ARE GOING TO FACE LOT’S OF DIFFERENT PEOPLE, WHO HAS MANY QUALITIES THAT YOU HATE.

I know school was the same. But college? It’s WORSE! Believe me. Get ready to face many many people with so many different qualities.

These are the most challenging facts that troubled me in the start of my college life.

Hope you enjoyed my post. What about you? What troubled you when starting your college life? Or what are your greatest fears about going to college?

Comment below. Share with all of us 🙂 I’d love to make your fears go away!

SUPERCHARGE YOUR MEMORY – WITH CAFFEINE

The BEST thing about studying for me, is a mug of strong black coffee…

Caffeine helps you stay awake and energized to study up all night if you want. But, that Is not all..

Through out the years many studies have been done, to find the relationship between studying and caffeine intake. Some believes that caffeine has negative effects on memory.

But, according to a very recent study done by researcher’s at John Hopkins university, a small amount of about 200mg of Caffeine a day enhances retention of memory. It enhances long term memory.

COFFEE IS CAFFEINE, BUT IS CAFFEINE COFFEE?

Once I was reading through a set of comments on a blog post regarding caffeine. And one person had commented saying ‘the article must have been paid by the coffee industry’.

Coffee, as many people mis-interpret, is NOT the only source of caffeine. There are many other sources of caffeine. If being sponsored, that article would have been sponsored even by tea industry or soft drink industry as both tea and soft drinks also has a fair amount of caffeine.

Would you believe me if I told you that your ‘mouth freshener’ had caffeine in it? (Now don’t just guzzle up the mouth fresher! Lol.. I hope you know that it is not a healthy thing, to drink mouth freshener..) Not just that according to health.com’s article there are 12 other weird sources of caffeine like ice-cream & chocolate.

CAFFEINE USE DISORDER?? Seriously??

But, unfortunately there is a disorder like that! It’s real.. According to statistics caffeine is one mostly abused drug all over the world. You become dependent on caffeine. Like, addicted? Yes! It’s being addicted to caffeine!! How much I love this.. I once had my phone wallpaper as ‘keep caffeinated and carry on’…

While some people, LIKE ME! shows not many negative effects due to caffeine overdose, for some people it may result in heart conditions and problems in conception. Of course, this will NOT come in if you overdose on caffeine very rarely. But, you get it right?

And, finally a little reminder on me,

Don’t drink more than 400mg a day of caffeine and specially make sure you get a good night’s sleep before exam day or you will not remember a thing! No matter how much the memory stimulants helped you gather up knowledge the whole time…

Hope you enjoyed the article.. Please feel free to share with us what your most preferred mode of caffeine is. Mine is and always will be coffee.. What is yours?

8 WAYS HOW YOUR SMARTPHONE HELPS YOUR STUDIES

As they say that a woman’s best friend is gold, I would say that a student’s best friend is her smart phone. True that technology is often criticized for its negative influence on the younger generation. But, it is equally important.

Too much of anything is always too much!

My smart phone helps me have a very organized and a peaceful student life. Here is how;

1) RECORD LECTURES

I started recording the lectures from this semester (the 2nd semester). In the 1st semester I was so out-of-this-world that I didn’t even know what the lecturer spoke about.

I find it so effective! It is impossible for my brain to hold all the stuff that the lecturer says. I know yours can’t too!

My college doesn’t let us record the lectures, but anyhow I do! I feel that it’s so unfair that they don’t let us record the lectures! Come on. We are not going to sell them right?

2) FOR QUICK INFORMATION

Most of the time I forget (or just don’t care) for the minute homework that the lecturer gives like,

“read up on flashbulb memories” or

“write a short essay on the 7 sins of memory”

My phone is my savior at such times. I simply Google it! In a matter of seconds I am equipped with all the bullet points to shoot at the lecturer. Lol. Seriously, this is why I love my phone, everyday!

3) ON-THE-GO DICTIONARY

A dictionary will come handy all the time when you are studying. Big text books, with big words are a night-mare for every student. I use dictionary.com. There are some other dictionary apps too. You can try those. But I am confident with dictionary.com.

4) E-MAIL

Usually in our college all the lecture slides and lecture schedules are mailed to us. So e-mail feature on my phone really helps me quickly browse through the schedule and get updated about assignments, get lecture notes and so on…

5) WHATSAPP

I just love whatsapp! No offence viber 🙂 But I think whatsapp is more user friendly. True I like the big and lovely stickers on viber, but whatsapp has something more than viber which attracts me.

This is not just to stay in touch with friends, but also to stay updated with the “class-room-stuff”. We have a class group on whatsapp, where all the important notices are whatsapp-ed as and when anyone gets to know it.

This is a great way to stay in touch with the assignments, projects, case studies or anything. Just in case you forget, someone will remind you…

6) MEMO’S

As same as sticky notes (I love sticky notes btw!) the memo feature in my phone lets me make note of all the h/w and every little stuff that I have to do.

7) PHOTO COPYING NOTES

No, I don’t mean photocopying-photocopying! I mean, taking photos of notes. Like when I get absent for a lecture (or to be frank, when I decide to bunk a class) I don’t like to give-up my chit chatting time with friends, to take down notes. Or look like a ‘you-know-who’ by keeping my face plastered on the books all the time..

This where my smart phone comes in handy. I take photos of my friend’s notes. Simple!

This is also good if you ARE in the class, but just don’t feel like taking down notes. But don’t make it a habit. Taking down notes is a very effective method of studying.

8) PLAY MIND GAMES

We need to have a break when studying and come on, who on earth would own a smart phone and NOT play games in it? Well I wouldn’t. I am not saying that you should ONLY play mind games like Sudoku or crosswords. But it really helps improve your vocabulary and analytical skills.

This is not a direct way in which my smart phone helps my studies. But Sudoku is a game that I really love and it helps me develop my focusing skills. Focus is very important in everything you do.

I do enjoy crosswords. But Sudoku is just a different thing. I LOVE IT!

P.S Don’t forget to let us know how your smart phone helps you in studies..

And, Oh! Don’t forget angry birds & cut-the-rope. They make you think too 🙂
